What is the QLD Battery Booster?

The Queensland Battery Booster Rebate is an exciting program introduced by the Queensland Government that aims to make solar battery systems more affordable for homeowners in Queensland and assist in easing cost of living pressures. Launched on the 12th of February 2024, this rebate will provide substantial savings for households looking to install a solar battery system and harness the benefits of solar energy.

Solar batteries are an excellent addition to most solar systems. Batteries store excess energy generated by your solar panels during the day and use it during the evening or on cloudy days when solar generation is limited. This means you can reduce your reliance on the grid and lower your electricity bills by using stored energy instead of purchasing it from your electricity provider.

With the QLD Battery Booster, homeowners can save thousands of dollars on the cost of installing a solar battery system. This significant subsidy will make solar batteries more accessible for many Queenslanders, enabling them to take advantage of the financial benefits of renewable energy.

We will continue to update this page with more information on how to apply for the QLD Battery Booster rebate and other important details about eligibility criteria, application deadlines, and the application process.

Why is this important for homeowners?

The QLD Battery Booster is something that both the industry and homeowners have waited for for a long time... we all know that solar batteries require a significant upfront investment, which for many families, isn't a cost they can justify.

The ROI on batteries is still negligible for many households when they already have good energy usage habits in place. Solar self-consumption is the single most important practice to implement when you have a solar energy system, as this directly impacts (lowers) your payback period.

Basically, if you have a solar energy system installed and you run your most energy-intensive appliances during the day, you're already doing a fantastic job at making the most out of your system. For many families, this ticks their boxes already. But, a solar system is limited to only offsetting your energy usage during the day while the sun is shining.

A battery amplifies your ability to use your solar energy over a full day, enabling you to maximise your solar self-consumption even further. Excess solar energy produced by your panels is diverted to your battery, which you can then access at night and minimise how much electricity you purchase from your retailer over peak periods (typically 4pm-9pm).

As mentioned above, offsetting your energy consumption during this period or overnight typically isn't worth the upfront cost of a solar battery, which is usually upwards of $9,000 (for a high-quality battery with a good warranty).

But, if you're eligible for a battery rebate... now we're talking.

With a reduced upfront investment, the payback period on your battery is significantly lowered, meaning that the ROI is much, much better for many households. For many working families, who are at work during the day and use the majority of their power across peak periods in the evening, this rebate is your ticket to substantial electricity bill savings and a shortened payback period.

Who is eligible for the rebate?

Information from the Department of Energy and Public Works states that the program will be available to all Queensland households from the date of the launch.

However, there are a few caveats that may or may not determine your eligibility for the rebate. Full eligibility details are listed below:

  • Maximum income: Applicants must have a combined annual household taxable income of $180,000 or less.
  • Battery purchase date: Home battery systems will only be eligible if purchased when the program is open and after the applicant has received conditional approval as part of the application process. Any batteries purchased before the program opening date and before receiving conditional approval will not be eligible under the program.
  • Minimum battery system size: A minimum 6 kilowatt hour (kWh) battery needs to be purchased from an approved battery systems list that will be published on the QLD Government's website when the program opens.
  • Approved battery system: Only battery systems on the list are eligible for the rebate. We will publish a list of approved battery systems on this web page when the program opens.
  • Minimum solar PV system size: Households must have at least a 5kW solar PV system (new or existing).
  • Approved installer: The battery system must be installed by an approved installer. We will publish a list of approved installers on this web page when the program opens.

If your planned battery system does not meet the minimum requirements, it will not be eligible for a rebate.

How much can you save with the rebate?

The scheme is open to individual homeowners with a combined household income below $180,000 a year, with approved batteries to be supplied by approved installers.

  • If the taxable income of the income earner for the application is under $66,667 the rebate is $4,000.
  • If the taxable income of the income earner for the application is over $66,667 up to $180,000 the rebate is $3,000.

When and how can you apply for the rebate?

The program became available to Queensland households on Monday 12th February 2024 and is now open for applications.

What are the benefits of installing a solar battery?

Installing a solar battery in your home comes with a wide range of benefits that make it a smart investment for Queensland homeowners. Let's dive into some of the key advantages of installing a solar battery system.

First and foremost, installing a solar battery allows you to take control of your energy usage. With a solar battery, you can store excess energy generated by your solar panels during the day and use it when you need it, such as during the evening or on cloudy days. This means you can reduce your reliance on the grid and lower your electricity bills by using stored energy instead of purchasing it from the utility company.

Another major benefit is backup protection. This is particularly important during power outages or times when the grid is unreliable. With a solar battery, you can continue to power essential appliances and keep the lights on even when the grid is down.
