CHEAPER HOME BATTERIES PROGRAM
The federal government has announced their commitment to implementing a Cheaper Home Batteries Program. From July 1st 2025, the program will provide a ~30% discount on the upfront cost of installing eligible small-scale battery systems.
The discount will be based on the battery's usable capacity and will gradually decrease until 2030.

About the Cheaper Home Batteries Program:
Eligibility
- An eligible battery storage system must be in the range of 5 kWh to 100 kWh in nominal capacity.
- The discount will be provided for up to 50 kWh of a battery's usable capacity.
- On-grid and off-grid systems are eligible to receive the discount.
Composition
- A single battery unit or a system of modular battery cells connected as one unit is considered eligible.
- Additional capacity added to an existing battery system is eligible if the battery system has not previously received a discount under the program and the added capacity is at least 5 kWh but the total capacity does not exceed 100 kWh.
Accreditation
- The battery and inverter must be listed as a Clean Energy Council (CEC)-approved product.
- The battery system must be installed by a person accredited for battery installations by Solar Accreditation Australia (SAA). Springers Solar's battery installers all meet this requirement.
VPP Capability
- On-grid battery systems need to be capable of connecting to a virtual power plant (VPP), but they do not need to be connected. This is up to customer discretion. You can learn more about VPPs here.
STC Calculation
- The number of small-scale technology certificates (STCs) that a battery system is eligible for will be in reference to the kilowatt-hours of usable capacity of the battery system. The usable capacity is the amount of energy that can be discharged from a battery and represents the power that a home or small business can draw from the battery.
- STCs will only be provided for the first 50 kWh of the usable capacity of a battery system.
- The discount rate in 2025 would be represented as 9.3 STCs per kWh of usable capacity, equivalent to around $372 per kWh.
- The number of STCs will decline for battery systems installed in 2026 and later years until the scheme ends in 2030.

How much is the rebate?
The program is not means-tested. Any Australian can access the rebate.
