How to Connect a Tesla Powerwall to WiFi

Reconnect your Tesla Powerwall to WiFi to view data in the Tesla app

If you can't see any data displayed on your Tesla app, it is likely that your Tesla Powerwall has disconnected from your WiFi network.

Don't worry! This just means your system isn't sending data to the monitoring portal. It doesn't mean that your system isn't working.

Your Tesla Powerwall can disconnect from your WiFi network if you have recently:

  • Changed internet providers
  • Changed your modem/router
  • Changed your WiFi password
  • Changed your WiFi extender
  • Experienced an outage or blackout

Reconnecting your Tesla Powerwall to WiFi can easily be done from the comfort of your own home without third-party help. The steps in this guide can work for both Powerwall 2 and Powerwall 3 units.

How to Connect to WiFi

1. Confirm WiFi Signal by the Tesla Powerwall

On your smartphone, open settings and click on WiFi settings. You should see your home's WiFi network appear here - if you don't, there is something wrong with your WiFi network or modem, and you will need to have this fixed before you can connect your Tesla Powerwall to WiFi. Once you've confirmed you have access to your WiFi network, you can move on to the next step.

2. Open the Tesla app

On your smartphone, open the Tesla app. Navigate to your home energy site.

Troubleshooting

If you cannot get the Powerwall to connect through the app, then you may need to reconnect via your Gateway, or via the Powerwall directly (Powerwall 3 only).

a. Powerwall 2 & Gateway 2

If you’re running a Powerwall 2 and Gateway 2, click the Gateway 2 in the Configure WiFi section. It will prompt you to scan the QR code located behind the door of your Gateway.

Then, accept the request to join the Powerwall’s hotspot network. Once your phone is connected, you can then select your home network, enter your password and connect.

b. Powerwall 3

If you have a Powerwall 3, click the Powerwall 3 in your app. You’ll need to open the toggle switch cover on the left-hand side of the battery. ‘Found Toggle Switch’ should appear on your screen. Select the prompt once you locate the switch. It’ll request to connect to your phone via Bluetooth, so you’ll just need to pair with the Powerwall 3. Once it’s paired, toggle your Powerwall 3 switch off and then back on, and click ‘Toggled Switch’ on your phone. It’ll then request to connect to your local network, so you can accept that connection.

c. Powerwall Restart

If any of this doesn’t work, you can also reset the Powerwall, which should restart the Powerwall’s connections. You can find the instructions for this in the Powerwall Owner’s Manual.
