Powerwall 3 Expansion Unit Explained

Expand your Powerwall 3 system with Expansion Units and increase your total storage capacity

Tesla Powerwall 3 has become easier to scale and increase total capacity size with the release of the Powerwall Expansion Units from Tesla. As home energy use continues to grow, thanks to the continued adoption of all-electric appliances and electric vehicles, battery storage systems must be scalable.

Tesla has answered this demand with the release of the Powerwall 3 Expansion Pack, providing a flexible and cost-effective way to increase storage capacity for existing or new Powerwall 3 installations.

What is a Tesla expansion pack?

The Powerwall 3 Expansion Pack is an add-on unit that can be connected in parallel to your leader Powerwall 3 and is designed to increase the energy storage capacity. Unlike the leader unit, which includes an integrated solar inverter and acts as the central connection point for your solar and electrical system, the expansion pack functions purely as additional battery storage. It does not contain an inverter, making it a more cost-effective solution for scaling Powerwall 3 systems.

Like the leader Powerwall 3, expansion units provide single-phase backup supply during power outages.

How many expansion packs can I add to Powerwall 3?

Each Powerwall 3 leader unit supports up to three expansion packs, allowing for significant growth in your total storage.

Storage capacity
Number of units
Total storage capacity

1 leader Powerwall 3

13.5kWh

1 leader Powerwall 3 + 1 Expansion Unit

27kWh

1 leader Powerwall 3 + 2 Expansion Units

40.5kWh

1 leader Powerwall 3 + 3 Expansion Units

54kWh

This system setup gives homeowners the flexibility to start small and scale up over time as energy needs grow.

Powerwall 3 expansion pack mounting options

You have two options in how the expansion units are installed, offering aesthetic flexibility:

  • Stacked configuration: Expansion units can be ground-mounted directly behind the leader Powerwall 3.
  • Individual mounting: Units can be mounted separately side-by-side. The leader Powerwall 3 can be positioned at either end of in the middle of the chain.

However, due to the cable length provided by Tesla, the maximum distance between the leader unit and any expansion unit is 4 metres - so don’t plan to have your expansion units installed elsewhere on the property.

NOTE

If you’re installing expansion units individually (not stacked behind the leader), you’ll need to purchase a glass cover for each unit to maintain the sleek, modern aesthetic consistent with Powerwall 3.

How does the Tesla expansion pack look?

The expansion packs are nearly identical in design to the Powerwall 3:

  • Dimensions: 1,105 (H) x 609 (W) x 168 (D) mm
  • Slightly slimmer: About an inch thinner than the leader unit
  • No LED: The expansion units do not include an LED light, so the Tesla logo will not illuminate

With the glass cover, expansion packs match the visual design of the Powerwall 3, maintaining a uniform look across multiple units.
