Installing an off-grid solar and battery system at your property enables you to power your home, business, or shed completely independent of conventional electricity. An off-grid system means your only source of electricity is the energy you generate from your solar array - it's the best way to obtain complete energy independence.
Off-grid systems are complex but are often the best way to secure an alternative energy source when the cost of grid connection is too expensive or you simply wish to forgo electricity bills. Off-grid solar is reliable, long-lasting, and more than capable of meeting your energy needs - you just need to ensure you are backed by an off-grid installer with proven experience.

Should I Pick an AC-Coupled or DC-Coupled System?

When looking at installing an off-grid power system at your property, you’ll either be installing an AC-coupled system or a DC-coupled system. Both systems allow you to store your excess solar energy in a battery, which you can then use to power your home outside of sunlight hours. But there is a slight difference between the two.
- AC-Coupling: An AC-coupled system will convert the DC power generated by your solar panels to AC power, which can be used to power your home’s appliances. It will then convert any leftover energy back into DC power to be stored in your solar battery.
- DC-Coupling: A DC-coupled system will push all of the DC power generated by your solar panels into your solar battery. It’ll then only draw out of the solar battery what is needed to power the home, and will convert it to AC power to do so.
So, essentially, the difference lies in when the DC solar energy is converted into AC energy for your household appliances. A good solar installer should accurately assess your property and recommend the system type that best suits your energy needs.

Off-Grid Power System
WOODFORD WASTE TRANSFER STATION
Springers Solar recently tendered and designed a standalone power system for the Woodford Waste Transfer Station. Given the site's estimated 40kWh daily energy requirement, the system we designed would need to be robust enough to power the site 24hrs a day, 365 days a year.
As the facility didn't have any viable roof space, the 36.9 kW solar array was ground-mounted using a specifically-engineered mounting system. The accompanying components, inclusive of Victron MPPTs, inverters and monitoring devices, and 60kWh of BYD LV Flex battery modules were housed in a shipping container located within the facility.

Container for a Regenerative Farm
RATHDOWNEY
This regenerative farm in the Scenic Rim was looking to expand their solar generation capability and offset the cost of irrigation on the property. The major challenge to this system design was trying to connect in the pre-existing array, which was located on a floodplain.
Our engineers designed an off-grid system encased in a shipping container and lofted on a metal frame. Additionally, we included a custom-engineered lofted ground-mount solar array to accompany their current array and maximise their solar generation.

Tiny House
CEDAR CREEK
We assisted a couple in achieving their off-grid energy goals for their tiny home located in Cedar Creek, Queensland. With the cost of grid connection too expensive, the couple opted for a DC-coupled solar and battery system to power their tiny home, including running temperature control, the hot water system, lighting, and all other electrical appliances.
The 3.4kW solar array and 16kWh of battery storage are more than capable of providing all the power the couple needs.

Frequently asked questions
Here are some common questions about off-grid solar systems.
An off-grid solar system operates completely independent of the electricity network. It uses solar panels to generate power, batteries to store energy, and typically a backup generator for extended cloudy periods. These systems are engineered for total energy independence if they are designed correctly.
Off-grid systems are ideal for rural properties, remote homes, farms, and sites where connecting to the grid is impractical or extremely expensive. In some cases, the cost of a grid connection exceeds the cost of a well-designed off-grid system.
Off-grid systems are significantly larger and more complex than grid-connected systems. Most residential setups start from $30,000+, depending on energy demand, battery capacity, backup generation, and site conditions. Proper system design is critical; this isn’t a place to cut corners.
It depends entirely on your daily energy usage and seasonal demand. We design systems based on appliance loads, peak usage, winter solar production, and future expansion. Off-grid systems must be sized for worst-case scenarios, not just average days.
In most cases, yes. Even with large battery banks, extended periods of low solar production (especially in winter) can require generator support. A properly integrated generator ensures reliability without overspending on unnecessary battery capacity.
Most modern off-grid systems use high-quality lithium battery storage due to efficiency, lifespan, and depth-of-discharge performance. However, battery chemistry selection depends on system size, climate, and budget. We only recommend proven, long-term solutions.
When engineered correctly, off-grid systems are extremely reliable. The key is proper load management, conservative design margins, and high-quality components. A well-designed system should provide stable, consistent power year-round.
Yes, within reason. Large loads, such as ducted air conditioning, electric heating, or pool heating, dramatically increase system size and cost. Smart appliance selection and energy-efficient design help keep systems practical and cost-effective.
Off-grid systems benefit from regular inspections, battery health checks, generator servicing, and performance monitoring. Because you’re fully independent from the grid, proactive maintenance is essential to ensure long-term reliability.
Not always. For suburban homes with reliable grid access, a grid-connected system with battery backup is often more cost-effective. Off-grid makes the most sense where connection costs are high or true independence is a priority. We assess your situation carefully before recommending either pathway.
