Logan Powerwall 3 & 32A EV Charging on Single-Phase

At this Logan-based home, the goal was clear: maximise rooftop solar generation, add serious battery storage, and enable fast EV charging - all while future-proofing the property for rising electricity prices and grid outages. The result is a fully integrated energy system that gives the homeowner control, resilience, and flexibility. 

This installation features a 15.8kW solar system, a Tesla Powerwall 3 with expansion battery, whole-home backup, and a Tesla Type 2 EV charger for a Tesla Model 3. 

The roof is fitted with 34 Canadian Solar 465 W panels, arranged in an east–west configuration. This layout is ideal for homes with higher daytime and evening energy use, as it spreads solar production across more hours of the day instead of concentrating it all at midday.

At the heart of the system is Tesla Powerwall 3, which includes a built-in 10 kW inverter. Because the inverter is integrated into the battery, there’s no need for a separate wall-mounted solar inverter, resulting in a cleaner, simpler installation.

An additional Powerwall 3 expansion unit has been installed, providing an extra 13.5 kWh of usable battery storage. This modular design means the homeowner can add up to two more expansion units in the future if their energy needs grow - for example, with a second EV or increased household loads.

A key feature of this project is the Tesla Type 2 EV charger, installed to support a Tesla Model 3. Thanks to the installation of a load control relay, the homeowner can now achieve 32 A single-phase EV charging - something that has traditionally been difficult to achieve without three-phase power.

By combining high-output solar, battery storage, and smart energy management, the system can deliver fast EV charging while minimising grid imports and maximising self-consumption of solar energy.
