Portable solar panels are typically used to recharge 12 V or 24 V batteries that run camping appliances such as fridges, lights, induction cooktops, and phone / laptop chargers. The exact devices you can power depend on the wattage of the panel and the size of your battery system.

Most portable solar panels are plug and play. Simply unfold the panel, place it in direct sunlight, and connect it to your battery through a solar regulator (to prevent overcharging). Yes, but performance is reduced. On overcast days, you can expect lower power output, often around 20 - 50% of the panel's rated capacity. In comparison, a sunny day with perfect conditions would see a power output of around 80% of the panel's rated capacity. For consistent energy supply, many campers size their panels to account for cloudy conditions or carry a backup charging method.

Start by calculating the daily energy usage of your appliances (in watt-hours). Match this against the expected solar energy you can generate (panel wattage x average peak sun hours per day). As a rule of thumb, a 200 W portable panel suits most campers running a 12 V fridge and a few small devices.

A quality portable solar panel will be composed of fixed solar panels. Fixed solar panels are made of tough glass and aluminium frames which can withstand the Australia's harsh climate. They are designed to withstand heat, UV exposure, and light rain. Flexi solar panels, solar blankets, and ultra thin solar panels are not comparable to a fixed portable solarcase as they will not withstand outdoor weather for extended periods of use.
