An auto-reset circuit breaker is a protective device that automatically interrupts electrical current when a fault or overload occurs, then resets itself once the fault clears. Unlike manual or fuse-based protection, it doesn’t need to be replaced or reset by hand, making it ideal for 12V and 24V systems commonly used in vehicles, caravans, and boats.

Auto-reset circuit breakers are commonly used in automotive, marine, and off-grid applications, including 4WDs, camper trailers, caravans, and boats. They’re perfect for circuits where occasional short-term overloads occur, such as lighting, pumps, or accessory circuits, and where easy, continuous protection is required without manual resetting.

An auto-reset breaker automatically restores power once it cools down after tripping, while a manual-reset breaker stays off until it’s manually reset by pressing a button or flipping a switch. Auto-reset types are great for non-critical loads, while manual-reset breakers are preferred for safety-critical systems where you need to identify and fix the fault before restoring power.

To select the correct breaker rating, match the amperage to your circuit’s expected continuous current draw, which is typically about 125% of the load current. For example, if your circuit draws 8A continuously, use a 10A breaker. Always refer to manufacturer guidelines and consider the wire size and device specifications for safe protection.

Many auto-reset circuit breakers are designed for dry environments, but weatherproof or sealed versions are available for marine, off-road, or outdoor use. If your installation is exposed to moisture, dust, or vibration, choose a breaker with a sealed housing or IP-rated protection to ensure long-term reliability.
