When Is It Time To Replace Your Solar And/Or Battery System?

Understanding whether your solar energy system can be fixed or if it's ready to be replaced.


If you own a solar and/or battery system, whether it's installed at your home or business, you probably avoid thinking about its inevitable replacement. But alas, there will come a day when your system will be begging to retire. After all, solar and batteries are just a form of technology - and like all technology, they'll eventually need to be replaced with something faster, smarter, or simply better. 

Think of your smartphone as an example - you'd never expect it to last 30 years. Solar and batteries are the same. At some point, your energy system will slow down, cease performing, and it'll need to be replaced. But when should you do it? And when is your system still fixable?

Solar and battery technologies have gotten exponentially better over time. A 10-year solar panel warranty used to be considered industry-leading... now, you wouldn't touch that with a 10-foot pole. Solar panels in 2026 have warranties spanning 25 to 30 years. Home batteries offer warranties of up to 10 years, and we're bound to see these warranties lengthen as the technology continues to refine.

It can be hard to identify whether your system is ready for retirement or if it can be fixed. But we have some general rules and advice for you to consider. 

Ultimately, the best course of action is to organise a technician to inspect the system and offer findings. Any decent solar installer will offer this service, but a word of warning - be sure to talk to a reputable company with at least two decades of operation, an in-house team, and after-sales warranty support. This will protect you from being baited by a quick sales company chasing an easy commission.

The general rule of thumb

At the very minimum, solar energy systems should last 10 years. 

If your system is under 10 years old and you experience any of the issues listed below, you should seek assistance from your original installer and manufacturer. 

Unless you've unfortunately been subject to a shoddy workmanship job, most of your system and components should remain well within warranty, and your installer can assist. 

When to replace solar panels

Solar panels are fragile. So fragile, in fact, that once they are broken, they can't be fixed. This is why it's so important to insure your system as soon as it's installed, as damage from hailstone or debris immediately equals a panel replacement. 

Micro-cracks are a solar panel's worst enemy, and if you notice hairline cracks or discolouration, it's time for a replacement. But what if only a handful of panels are cracked? If your array is 5+ years old, it's more cost-effective to replace the system (believe it or not). Identifying broken panels and locating similarly sized panels with the same power output is a difficult and costly exercise. 


Damaged solar panels


When we encounter this, our advice is to either make peace and leave the damaged panels alone if the remainder of the system continues to operate. Sometimes, if visibly damaged panels are still within warranty and are in an accessible position, we may be able to pull them out and restring with a few new panels to "fix" the problem. 

The only other alternative is to replace the array entirely. 

Aside from obvious cracks or discolouration, it's important to monitor the performance and output of your array. If your system is 10+ years old and begins to show isolation errors or other faults, then it's time to replace the system. Locating and diagnosing an isolation fault is another costly exercise, often more costly than a new system. 

If your 10+ year old system is no longer providing cost savings, or anything meaningful in terms of returns or reducing grid usage, that's another sign it's time to replace. Many systems 10+ years old have only 1 - 5kW inverters, which are very undersized now for most modern homes and energy usage patterns. 

When to replace solar batteries

If your home battery is 10 years or older, it's time to start paying close attention to its performance. If the battery storage capacity begins to show a usable capacity below ~60%, the battery is nearing its end of life. 

It will continue to operate, just at a reduced capacity - you will likely experience issues with it not supporting load or collapsing under load.

Older systems that have minimal control or customisation systems will be especially prone to fail, as you are unable to manually override settings. These battery types are vulnerable to charging incorrectly (therefore, not charging at all), and they may be unable to balance correctly. You should never introduce a new battery module to a system like this - it needs to be removed and a new system installed.

To maximise the lifespan of your system and avoid a premature replacement, you must monitor your system and rectify performance issues early and regularly. By monitoring your system, you'll grow accustomed to any irregularities and troubleshoot before you receive your next electricity bill.

If you notice issues within your warranty period, you must notify your installer or manufacturer as soon as possible. Warranty replacements and rectification under warranty can take time, so the earlier you consult your installer, the better. Make use of your warranty period and regularly monitor your system during this period to ensure everything operates smoothly.
