Charging speed depends on your charger size and your vehicle’s onboard charger. Most Australian homes install 7kW single-phase chargers, adding roughly 30–40 km of range per hour. Properties with three-phase power can install 11kW–22kW chargers for significantly faster charging.
Most homes start with a 7kW charger, which balances fast charging with a standard single-phase supply. If you have three-phase power or want faster charging for larger EV batteries, an 11kW or 22kW unit may be suitable. Most modern EVs use the Type 2 charging standard, which is compatible with the majority of home chargers in Australia. We’ll confirm compatibility based on your vehicle model, so your charger works seamlessly from day one.
Yes, most smart chargers have an app that lets you schedule charging, track energy use, prioritise solar, set charging limits, and optimise off-peak tariffs. It’s an easy way to reduce costs and get the most out of your EV setup.
Single-phase EV Charging Options
You can choose to charge your EV on a single-phase supply in one of three ways:
- 10A or 15A power point connected to a primary tariff
- 20A EV Charger*
- 32A EV Charger*
*Above 20A equipment like dedicated EV chargers must have 'Active Device Management' in place. See Queensland Electricity Connection Manual (QECM) clause 8.10 & 8.14.2.2 for more information.
32A EV chargers can be configured in one of the following arrangements:
1. Economy tariff using a network device
Economy (or load control) tariffs have been available in QLD for many years, and most electricity retailers offer these to customers for appliances like hot water systems, pool pumps, and air conditioners.
EVs can also be connected to an economy tariff via a dedicated EV charger. An economy tariff (i.e., T33 or Controlled Load 2) is suitable for EV charging as it provides a minimum of 16 hours power supply per day.
2. Primary tariff with basic active management via a network device (if available)
This option is available for customers who want to connect a dedicated EV charger to a primary tariff and still use their solar power when charging a vehicle. It is also available to those who wish to utilise time-of-use tariffs.
The network device that will be installed to permit this arrangement may be operated by Energex to turn off power to the circuit supplying the EV charger. These supply interruptions generally occur in late afternoon and early evening peak periods, or when the network is under stress.
3. Primary tariff with dynamic connection
Dynamic connections offer two-way communication between the EV charger and Energex. Energex sends signals to temporarily vary the capacity at which the EV charger can operate, depending on the demand on the electricity network. Power supply to the EV charger will only be reduced if the local network is under stress.
This connection allows for an EV charger to be installed on a primary tariff, so customers can charge from solar or with time-of-use tariffs. With a dynamic connection, where the output of the EVSE has been constrained, you can still use a standard power point to charge an EV (if applicable to your EV).
