Maximise Your Solar Energy With A Solar Battery

Solar Battery

Pairing a solar battery with your solar energy system is the best way for home and business owners to maximise their solar self-consumption. Imagine storing any excess solar your system produces during the day in a battery, ready to be used at night or during power outages... That’s exactly what a solar battery allows you to achieve.

Adding a solar battery to your solar system installation will generate greater returns long term. This is because self-consumption (using your solar energy rather than exporting it) is worth roughly double your feed-in tariff, meaning that using up as much of your solar as possible is the key to maximising your solar savings.

Solar batteries, or solar energy storage systems, work by storing electricity generated by solar panels during the day so that it can be used later when the sun isn’t shining.

  1. Solar panels on your roof collect sunlight as direct current (DC) electricity
  2. The DC electricity is then sent to a solar inverter, which converts it to alternating current (AC) electricity that can be used to power your home or business
  3. Any excess electricity that is generated by the solar panels and not used immediately can be sent to the solar battery storage system for later use
  4. When the sun goes down or when you experience a power outage, your property will draw electricity from the solar battery rather than from the grid, reducing your electricity bill and carbon footprint

If you didn’t have a solar battery installed, your excess solar energy would be exported to the grid in exchange for a feed-in tariff, which varies depending on your energy provider.

Solar batteries allow you to maximise the solar energy you produce; using up as much of your solar as possible is the key to maximising your solar savings.

Powerwall 3 + Expansion Packs

BRACKEN RIDGE

The owner of this home recently contacted Springers Solar to help them expand their solar and battery system. Three Tesla 13.5kWh Expansion Packs were installed alongside the master Tesla Powerwall 3, to increase storage capacity from the original 13.5kWh to a whopping 54kWh.

12kW of Canadian Solar 465W N-type TOPCon solar panels were installed on the roof of this home to charge the 54kWh of battery storage before mid-morning, every morning. The system works like a well-oiled machine, with evening power usage and overnight air conditioning depleting the batteries by 30% nightly, before the solar tops up the charge once the sun rises.

Frequently asked questions

Here are some common questions about  residential solar & battery systems.

A solar and battery system combines rooftop solar panels with energy storage. Your panels generate power during the day, your home uses what it needs, and the excess is stored in a battery for use at night or during a blackout. It’s about maximising self-sufficiency and reducing reliance on the grid.

For many Australian households, yes. If you use a lot of energy in the evening, are on a time-of-use tariff, or want backup power during outages, a battery can make a big difference. We assess your usage patterns to determine whether storage will deliver strong long-term value.

A quality 6.6kW solar system with a 10-13kWh battery typically starts from around $12,000-$20,000+ installed, depending on brands, backup requirements, and system size. Every home is different, which is why we design systems around your goals, not a one-size-fits-all package.

That depends on battery size and how your system is configured. A standard 10-13kWh battery can comfortably power essential loads overnight. With larger systems and proper design, whole-home backup is possible, but it needs to be engineered correctly.

Yes, if it’s designed for backup. Not all batteries automatically provide power during outages. We design systems with dedicated backup circuits so your essentials (or entire home, if desired) stay powered when the grid goes down.

Most quality lithium batteries are designed to last 10-15 years and come with strong performance warranties. Over time, they’ll gradually lose some storage capacity, but reputable brands are built for long-term Australian conditions.

It is possible, but going fully off-grid requires significantly larger solar arrays, more battery storage, and often backup generation. For most suburban homes, a grid-connected system with battery backup offers the best balance of reliability and cost-effectiveness.

In many cases, yes. Some systems allow for modular battery expansion as your energy needs grow, especially if you add an EV or increase usage. We’ll recommend a scalable setup if future flexibility is important to you.

It can significantly reduce it, but not always eliminate it entirely. Your savings depend on system size, usage habits, tariff structure, and seasonal generation. Our goal is to design a system that meaningfully reduces your bills while delivering reliable performance year after year.

For homeowners planning to stay in their property long-term, absolutely. With rising energy prices, increased electrification (EVs, induction cooking, heat pumps), and growing demand for energy security, solar plus storage positions your home for the future.
